6 Tips To Be More Fit When You Are Always Busy

We all know by now that maintaining an active lifestyle should be one of our top priorities in life.

When we are busy and stressed out, it is even more crucial to stay on top of our fitness.

But, how do you do that when you are pressed for time or it feels like you have no extra time in your day to spare?

Only by taking care of ourselves do we stand a chance of being the kind of person we strive to be on the job, at home with our loved ones, and in our communities. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Work, in particular, can get in the way of working out, especially during busy seasons that demand more of your time outside of work.

In fact, there is a big paradox going on, and it becomes more obvious the more challenging (and exciting!) a job gets: On one hand, we struggle to find time to work out; on the other, we can’t afford to not exercise because it is integral to sustained success and harmony in every area of our lives.

I decided to focus on exactly this and to come up with specific, easy implemented ways to  address this paradox and to help even the busiest of the busy stay fit and healthy!

  1. Enjoy the activity that you do.  By now you might be thinking, “I hate running!” (or whatever other activity gets you going)—and that’s okay. We each need to be realistic and to know ourselves. One person’s running is another person’s yoga, weight training, or dance. There is a moment of self-discipline that comes into play when sticking to an exercise plan, but why not make it easier on yourself? Choosing a form of exercise that fits your lifestyle, personality, and taste will keep you committed for much longer than if you chose something that was unpleasant. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different forms of exercise until you find what works best for you. If it does not excite you, then maybe you should find an alternative so that you are motivated to keep up with the activity.
  2. Make your activity convenient.  If you have a break during your errands, hit up the gym for a walk on the treadmill or a short bout of strength training.  Take a walk in the park. Sometimes, you have to get creative with how you fit in more activity— park further away from the store entrance, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or walk to work. Split your workout sessions into shorter increments to get in your full amount of activity time each day. Remember, it all adds up and, when you are busy, focusing on short bursts of activity multiple times a day will be your best friend.
  3. Find a workout buddy.  Motivation can come in numbers! If you find it challenging to commit and stay committed, then grab a workout buddy and use the power of numbers. When you can hold each other accountable, you will be more likely to stay focused and committed when you know that someone is cheering for you and making sure you stay on track.
  4. Take fitness breaks over your lunch period.  Lunch breaks are your best fitness friend! Not only will you benefit from the brain break, but recharging your batteries and creating more inner fire to carry you throughout the day will make you more productive. Try taking a walk, doing a few sit ups or push ups, or stretch your body before you have eat. Office workouts are just as beneficial as getting outside for a walk.
  5. Be realistic.  Even if you may not be able to work out as much as you have in the past, any physical activity is beneficial.  Try not to have an all or nothing attitude.  Remember, it is proven that by performing 3 days a week for 30 minutes to 1 hour enhances your health. And, just because you may not have 30 minutes in one sitting, don’t let that hold you back from breaking a sweat. Split that up throughout your day.
  6. Make a commitment and stick to it. One of the most given reasons to skip a workout goes something like this: “I am just too busy at work today; I can’t make my yoga class.” When I hear that, my BS meter goes off the charts! If you unexpectedly had to pick up your child from school and had no back-up plan, how would you deal with the situation? Cancel an internal meeting? Take some work home with you? Do some hard prioritizing? The truth is that when we really need to, we get out of the office at the time that is necessary. Make a schedule (write it down if it helps!), stick to it, and remind yourself that working out is a priority worth keeping. YOU are a priority!

Being active and staying fit during busy times is so important.

It not only decreases your physical stress and allows you to physically be able handle increased workloads, but it also:

  • releases endorphins to better handle mental stress and obligations
  • enhances sleep
  • lowers blood pressure and cholesterol
  • lowers blood sugar
  • decreases weight gain
  • increases energy
  • fights depression and anxiety
  • decreases chance of heart diseases and certain kinds of cancer

Use these tips and the motivation from knowing these positive benefits to fuel your fire. Even you— the busiest of the busy— can find more time for getting fit!
