Why Sugar Sucks And You Still Love It

Sugar sucks…

…away your health, your energy, your vitality, and your emotional balance.

And we all know that.

This isn’t big news to you. You have heard over and over again why sugar wrecks havoc on your health. Duh… but, you are still here reading this and that leads me to believe that sugar still has it’s grimy little addictive hands clenched on you.

Why is that and why is it so hard to let go of the sugar in your life? Why do we still look past sugar being one of the prime culprits in our obesity epidemic?

It goes quite deeply and is about many factors- emotional blocks, fears, patterns, habits, associations. It is not just about willpower. It gets deep!

But, what if:

  • You are already working on those inner blocks
  • You need answers NOW and not months down the road
  • You just are not ready to clear your blocks and need to start somewhere less scary

Then looking at the foods you choose and the hidden sugars that may be lurking in the background is a perfect start. This IS important for any health plan, but especially when you are not sure where to start or why you are not getting results.

Hidden sugars in our foods are everywhere- even in foods that are considered healthy or are labeled as healthy options. Nothing makes my head go into orbit faster than when I see packaged fruit that is sweetened! What?!? Isn’t fruit already sweet and why the hell is sugar added to a natural sugar. But, there are companies that do this (and reasons for their madness) and it is your job to be aware and to choose wisely!

See, when we continuously eat or are unconsciously eating sugar-laden foods, our palates physically begin to change and our brain becomes wired to crave that sugar. We literally start an addiction. It has been stated that sugar is 8x more addictive than cocaine!

Let’s get real with one of the biggest hidden sugar issues for many of us- What is your beverage of choice?

Do you drink a lot of sugary drinks or do they play a consistent role in your nutrition plan. Maybe you do not even drink soda, but do you pay attention to the amount of sugar that is in your everyday sweetened beverages?

If not, I would make sure to pay a little more attention to what you consume. If you find that you are drinking a lot of drinks that contain sugar, I would reconsider! Here is why…

Sugary drinks are found to be the most fattening aspect of our modern diet! Why is that?
When sugar is added, it can be a complete disaster and getting it in liquid form is even worse. In liquid form, it can be easier to quickly enter your bloodstream and spike your blood sugar.

Another problem with liquid sugar is that that your brain really does not register the calories or make you feel any less hungry. Your mouth does not chew, which is a signal to the brain and stomach to start digestion. You actually end up eating more calories overall because of the lack of satiety and your brain not being involved in the consumption of the food.

Of course, this is only one example. There are a ton of other foods that are hiding extra sugar. But why is this so important to you to know?

The body uses sugar to fuel the body. If all the sugar is not utilized, the body stores it and it stores it as FAT! Research (and history) has been shown that sugar makes you “fat,” fat doesn’t make you “fat.” Interestingly enough, the obesity epidemic has been linked with the time period in our history that sugar and artificial sweeteners began to replace fat in the Standard American Diet, even though calories were not significantly decreased. So, if it is fat that makes us fat, which we have been told over and over again, than how is this all possible? Hmmmmm…food for thought!

At the James Beard Foundation Food Conference in 2014, Robert Lustig, M.D., professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at the University of California – San Francisco, gave a presentation that showed 56 names that sugar can be disguised as in an ingredient label. Women’s Health did an article on this and shared a helpful infographic to get you in the know-

Sugar is sugar, but some are healthier alternatives. If you are going to add a bit of sweet to your food, opt for options like raw honey, maple syrup, dates, brown rice syrup, coconut sugar, and fruit (pureed or not). Or, you can add stevia which is a natural, no calorie sweetener. Just don’t over do the natural sweeteners because they are still sugar.

The benefits of these sweeteners? They have more antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals instead of being void of nutrients like the processed sugars.

Action Step:

Take action now! Be a diva and get vigilant with exploring what hides in the depths of your food’s ingredients lists. To get real, you have to get transparent. So, open up your cupboards and check if there are any hidden terms that look innocent, but actually mean sugar. If so, either get rid of them or consume them, but vow to never buy them again. There are so many other healthier options out there. It takes becoming aware first, so you can get wise and diva-like in your healthier habits!
