When I use to think of the word “grounding,” an overall sense of anxiety washed over my young and fearful mind. Even though I didn’t get grounded often, I believe it was a natural emotional instinct for all teenagers to shudder at the thought. As I got older and more accustomed to what true health, vitality, and weight loss was, I realized how kick ass it was for me to be grounded (aka earthing)…totally grounded and wiggling my toes with delight!
Years ago, I went to my local naturopath to discuss a few areas of concern. I disclosed that I was on the verge of pure stress overload. See, I had no real clue as to handling stress. I was at a point of my transforming life where I was changing careers and had a thousand dreams and passions and desires. I wanted to build my Wonder Woman self and would dive into every area of life that interested me, regardless of how exhausted I was or how stressed out I got or without even really considering if it was a priority or not that would catapult me into my envisioned future. Full force ahead and head down, I pushed onward. And, then I crashed. I crashed hard and I had no idea why or how to balance it all out. My naturopath clued me into something profound: Being Wonder Woman meant I was flying around at speeds of light and never really planting myself on the ground. To truly be connected and gain the healing properties from the earth, I would need to get myself barefooted and connect into some dirt. These healing properties have been scientifically proven. They have been proven to heal the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body on a deep cellular level, changing the physical body and lowering stress levels. Holy moly, momma! And, if you know anything about my philosophy of health coaching and weight-loss, you may have heard me say that my #1 weight-loss step is lowered stress and body inflammation. This is why getting grounded is a first step to pure health, vitality, and weight-loss. Let’s dive a little deeper and see why you NEED to start grounding TODAY!
What is grounding (aka earthing)?
Grounding is when a you plant your bare feet into the Earth’s natural surfaces to absorb the electron-rich ground. This is especially effective when it is humid or wet outside. This is quite soothing to the nervous system and is essential for healthy functioning of the immune system, circulation, the body’s natural biorhythms and other processes. Scientific research has been shown that there is a direct connection between a healthy mental state and a lowered risk of chronic disease and inflammation when being out (especially heightened when barefoot) in nature. Why? Because of grounding! Research has documented the direct connection between lowered inflammation, lessened chronic disease, and a slowed aging process when the body is being grounded and the mind is relaxed.
So, what surfaces ground you and which do not?
Dig your bare feet into:
- Grass (moist grass is even better!)
- Concrete or Brick (that is not painted or sealed)
- Ceramic tile
- Rubber and plastic
- Tar or tarmac
Our ancestors had so many more opportunities for regular grounding. It wasn’t until recently that it became more of a challenge. Asphalt, wood, rugs, plastics, and shoes have separated us from this contact. There are special shoes that you can get that can help you ground while wearing them (I have links below).
What are the health benefits of regular grounding?
The human body is a living matrix where everything is connected into a finely tuned machine. Now this finely tuned machine can be manipulated according to our surroundings and research has found that the Earth acts as a “charger” for the physical body that we live in. There is a constant flow of energy between our bodies and the earth. When you put your feet on the ground, you absorb large amounts of negative electrons through the soles of your feet, especially on the ball of the foot. Why is this so important? In essence, when you ground, you are charging every single cell in your body with energy your body can use for self-healing.
Body Inflammation. Our world is infested with free radical stress from exposure to mercury, pollution, cigarettes, insecticides, pesticides, trans fats, and radiation, just to name a few. This free radical stress depletes your body of electrons, leaving you stressed out and tired and can create an inflamed body – which is a breeding ground for disease, infections, and cancers. Your blood thickens when exposed to free radical stress, therefore increasing the positive charge accumulation in the body. Why is this so dangerous? Inflammation, my friends! Chronic inflammation occurs and is the hallmark for most chronic and degenerative diseases (i.e., fibromyalgia, migraines, arthritis, PF pain, etc, etc). Wow! Does that mean you can really change these chronic issues? You bet you can!
Your Blood. The way grounding affects your blood is a major part of why it’s so beneficial. Harmful toxins like a high-sugar diet, smoking, electromagnetic forces, emotional stress, anxiety, high cholesterol, and high uric acid tend to make your blood thicker and slow-moving. Grounding helps to thin the blood and provides your red blood cells with a surplus of electrons so they can effectively repel each other and avoid being sticky.
- Sticky red blood cells = blood clots, which can lead to a stroke or a heart attack and/or even death.
- Thick and slow-moving blood = lack of oxygen traveling to tissues = increased inflammation throughout your body.
Research has demonstrated it takes about 80 minutes for the free electrons from the earth to reach your bloodstream and transform your blood cells. See, no time at all!
Your Sympathetic Nervous System. The SNS supports your heart rate variability (important for balancing) in your autonomic nervous system. Pain relief, improved sleep, and a generally enhanced sense of well-being are but a few of the health benefits reported by people who try grounding.
Is that it? Heck no! Grounding is also good for…
- Reducing inflammation by defusing excess positive electrons
- Reducing chronic pain
- Improving Sleep
- Increasing Energy
- Lowering stress and promoting calmness by reducing stress hormones.
- Normalizing biological rhythms including circadian rhythm
- Improving blood pressure and blood flow
- Relieving muscle tension and headache
- Lessens menstrual and female hormone symptoms
- Speeds healing- used in some places to prevent bed sores
- Can eliminate jet lag
- Protecting the body from EMFs
- Shortens recovery time from injury or athletic activity
- Reducing or eliminating snoring
- Helping support adrenal health
Last but not least, when you are grounded to the earth, the negatively charged electrons you receive increase the structure of the water in your cells and your body is made mostly of water! Just think of all the deep healing that is occurring.
How does it help you lose weight?
Grounding is fabulous for weight loss! How? First and foremost, when the body is functioning properly, the body hums like a finely tuned machine. Right? Therefore, when the above health benefits are in place, the body will be under less stress and your cortisol levels will be lowered. When your cortisol levels are lowered, your adrenal glands are less likely to be taxed and, therefore, the dangerous body fat accumulated through stress will be lower. But, there are two main benefits that I want to highlight that help to increase your weight loss:
- Decreased body inflammation. The more your body is inflamed, the more water retention you have and the more bloated your look and feel.
- Decreased stress. When you are stressed and your body feels taxed and fatigued, your cortisol levels increase and your hormones become out of wack. What happens next? Your body starts to store fat and you start to gain weight.
How can you ground yourself all year long and while indoors?
Not all surfaces allow you to ground, but it has become easier to ground yourself all year long! It’s pretty challenging to ground by going barefoot inside your home. Think wood floors and insulating materials, vinyl, carpet, sealed tiles, and marble if it’s chemically treated and placed on top of sealed concrete. But, do not fear! There are shoes and bed sheets and mats, just to name a few, that are lined with silver to help you ground more effectively. If you have a concrete basement that is unfinished, you can walk barefoot and connect into the earth.
There are some links that I found that can lead you to the right place for all your grounding needs:
While walking barefoot is clearly one of the most natural things you can possibly do to improve your health, there are still some contraindications and situations in which you may want to use caution. If you take Coumadin or any other blood thinners, grounding on a regular basis could be dangerous because your blood can become like water. If you still want to ground for all the other amazing health benefits, work with your doctor to see how you can make this safer for you!
